Safaga is the diving capital of the Egyptian mainland, thanks to a cluster of world-class sites within an hour's boat ride: Panorama Reef, Middle Reef, Abu Kafan and the wreck of the Salem Express — all considered advanced-level dives and far less crowded than the equivalents from Hurghada.
The town itself is small, functional and refreshingly non-touristy, which is exactly the appeal for repeat visitors. Transfer duration & the drive
The transfer from Hurghada Airport to Safaga is a 55 km southbound run on the Safaga Highway, past Makadi and Soma Bay, into the outskirts of the town itself. It takes 50 to 60 minutes depending on the destination — dive hotels north of town are closer to 50 minutes, the cruise terminal and hotels south of the port are closer to 60. Traffic in Safaga town itself can be slow during morning shift change at the port.
